Hey man, curious as to what you do exactly as an IT consultant. The Big 4 IT Auditors seem to get a lot of travel as well. i cannot take another screenshot or i will die. My feeling is generally there's more jobs out there for regular financial auditors since it's such a 'generalist' role. Maybe CIO route? I live around Silicon Valley and there seems to be an endless demand around here for IT Audit, they simply can't staff enough roles it seems.

Seems like IT audit is what you make of it. I would agree with Potatogun, becoming a CFO or Controller is not really a transition from IT Audit. I come from a financial audit background and it's a whole different world compared to IT audit because you're not really dealing with accounting principles and details on the balance sheets or income statements. We have ten open positions for IT auditors at my company.

The question I would pose to yourself is what makes you think IT audit would be more interesting? A busy week for IT Audit is a lot less busy than financial audit on a public client from what I've heard. I love IT and my major was both IS and Finance so I thought this would be a good fit for me but I just don't enjoy the work. I like both so far, but in a year or so I'll want to move to big 4 and I imagine I'll have to specialize at that point. As to 'IT Audit Life' it mostly depends on your client base. You don't have to deal with the entire audit process but you know enough about audit and compliance to give consultation services.
